Biography

chaplinBorn and raised in Corpus Christy and graduated from W. B. Ray High School in 1972. Married to Cherie (39 years), having two daughters and four grandchildren.

My interest in the things of Southern culture and specifically, the Confederacy, goes all the way back to my boy-hood years. My grandma would tell stories of her grandpa, who served in the Thirty Second Alabama Infantry. He was killed at Tunnel Hill, Georgia.  I have found that the more diligent study of primary sources (not that hard to find), is the best presentation of Lincoln’s War. My desire has been to make at least some small difference in my little world on this most important subject of history. History books, the media, school systems and on, and on, and on, abound in falsehoods and inaccuracies of Confederate and Southern history.

My educational background: Bachelors – Howard Payne University, Brownwood, Texas – 1979; Master of Arts (R. E.) – Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas – 1986; Doctor of Religious Education – Covington Theological Seminary, Rossville, Georgia – 2002

I have served as pastor in churches in Texas: Corpus Christi, Ft. Worth, Stanton, San Antonio and Denton and also in Sheridan, Wyoming. With God’s leadership, strength and wisdom I have served the Lord Jesus Christ for 30 years and counting. At this point in God’s call in ministry I serve as Director of “Living in the Land of Cotton.” The two fold purpose for Living in the Land of Cotton is to first, give evidence that there was justification and rights for secession and the existence of the Confederate States of America by the use of primary sources. Second, to demonstrate that the culture of the Confederacy had a moral stability built on the Christian faith using primary sources.

Member of the Stonewall Jackson Camp 901, Sons of Confederate Veterans, serving as Chaplain.

Member of the Texas Division Dismounted Texas Color Guard, Sons of Confederate Veterans, serving as Chaplain.

Upcoming Meeting – June 2015

In our May meeting, Larry Wilhoite (Commander, O.M. Roberts Camp #178, Waxahachie, Texas) presented “Texans and Their Flags”, along with his very knowledgeable wife Pam. They reproduce historic Confederate flags, many of them being flags which may be fairly obscure and unknown by many folks today. The presentation was very educational and very well done.

In June Commander Jack Dyess of the Col. W. H. Griffin SCV Camp 2235 will bring a somber presentation comparing the situation and conditions of the Federal POW Camp Douglas (Chicago) with the Confederate POW camp at Andersonville, Georgia.

For July, we will have Carolyn Francisco from the Rockwall County Historical Foundation presenting “Rockwall County: Believe It or Not”.

Upcoming Meeting – May 2015

In our April 13 meeting, Compatriot Bob Rubel, Commander of the Terry’s Texas Rangers Camp #1937, Cleburne, Texas, presented to us, “Images of the Conflict-Art of the War of Northern Aggression”. Bob brought with him a number of prints pertaining to our Confederate Veterans and their experiences during the War of Northern Aggression. In the process of showing these, he made some comments about various artists who produce these works, as a way of introducing some of them to us.

On May 11 meeting, Larry Wilhoite (Commander, O.M. Roberts Camp #178, Waxahachie, Texas) will present “Texas and Their Flags”, a presentation recently given at the Confederate Heritage and Lecture Series in Longview, Texas.

Upcoming Meeting – Feb/Mar 2015

Our January meeting was a bit unusual as we were supposed to view a movie on the creation of the Confederate Battle Flag. Due to a technical glitch, we could not get the audio to function correctly, so we had to bypass the viewing, but we will try again in the near future. In our February meeting we had a business meeting. As most of you know, Dan DuBose has agreed to serve as our Chaplain, and is already taking care of that duty on behalf of the camp.

On March 9 Richard Montgomery, Chaplain for the Stonewall Jackson Camp in Denton will be back with us with the presentation, “Culture of the Confederacy”. As usual with him, it is expected that his presentation will have lots of good information and education for us.

Meetings remain on the second Monday of each month, at Soulman’s BBQ, 691 E. I-30, Rockwall (near SE corner of Ridge Rd. and I-30, next door to Applebee’s). Dinner at 6 pm, meeting starts at 7 pm.

Upcoming Meetings – January 2015

In November Norma Holley visited to speak about the Knights of the Golden Circle. Norma’s presentation gave us a glimpse of this not-so-well-known organization and its activities both during and after the war.

In December out meeting was merged with the 4th Brigade Christmas Party in McKinney. As in past years, it was held at the North Texas History Center in downtown McKinney and a good time was had by all. Attending from the Rockwall Cavalry Camp were Commander-Elect Robert Bass, 1st Lt. Cmdr Daryl Coleman, and Dan DuBose and his lovely wife. The party was a wonderful opportunity to allow a number of our members from various camps around the 4th Brigade to become better acquainted. We had folks there from 7 of our 10 camps of the 4th Brigade.

Our next meeting will be on Monday, January 12, time and place as usual. Texas Division 2nd Lt. Cmdr Gary Bray is bringing a film for our viewing pleasure. The film is “The Southern Cross: The Story of the Confederacy’s First Battle Flag”. I am told the film is a very well-done documentary of the creation of the flag known then and thereafter as The Confederate Battle Flag. I would encourage you to come prepared to take a few notes, as we plan to offer a couple of prizes to correct answers of questions after the viewing. We will also swear in our 2015 officers at this meeting.

Meetings remain on the second Monday of each month, at Soulman’s BBQ, 691 E. I-30, Rockwall (near SE corner of Ridge Rd. and I-30, next door to Applebee’s). Dinner at 6 pm, meeting starts at 7 pm.

Upcoming Meeting – November 2014

In our October 13 meeting, Ronnie Atnip of the Capt. Bob Lee Camp in Bonham visited to speak on the Lee-Peacock feud. It was very informative and gave us a small taste of the many events which occurred just up the road from us in that difficult time after the war. Hopefully your interest was captured and you will read more on these events.

On November 10, Norma Holley will visit to speak about the Knights of the Golden Circle. This promises to be something you may not have heard much about previously, and extremely interesting. Norma will most likely bring along her husband, Johnnie Holley, our very own Texas Division Commander.

Also make note of December 6. This is the date of our annual 4th Brigade Christmas Party. We always have a good time at this gathering. It is for you, so please plan to be there. See page 4 for details.
