Upcoming Meetings – October 2014

On September 8th we were very fortunate to have author Scott Bowden with us . His presentation was entitled “Fearless Under Fire: How Robert E. Lee Commanded the Army of Northern Virginia”. It was extremely interesting, but brief due to the time constraints of our meeting. This is why you should consider adding some of his books to your personal library.

In our October meeting, Ronnie Atnip of the Capt. Bob Lee Camp in Bonham will visit to speak on the Lee-Peacock feud. We have heard that he is very knowledgeable on this subject. In November, Norma Holley will visit to speak about the Knights of the Golden Circle.

Meetings remain on the second Monday of each month, at Soulman’s BBQ, 691 E. I-30, Rockwall (near SE corner of Ridge Rd. and I-30, next door to Applebee’s).

Upcoming Meetings – July 2014

On June 9th Dr. Rick Montgomery, Chaplain for the Stonewall Jackson Camp (as well as a church pastor) in Denton, returned with a new presentation on his brand new book The Confederate Book of Quotes and Narratives. I cannot say enough how proud I am to have men like Rick Montgomery in our ranks. He definitely brought further academic respectability to us when he joined the SCV.

While a speaker for our July meeting is still pending, Dennis Brand, Commander of the Douglas Camp in Tyler, will be with us in August to speak about awarding outstanding graduate awards to deserving students in several of our area high schools. This is something we can start on right now.

Upcoming Meetings – April 2014

In March, we were fortunate to have with us Dr. Richard Lee “Rick” Montgomery, chaplain for the Stonewall Jackson Camp in Denton, Texas. Rick also pastors Cooper Creek Baptist Church in Denton. Rick spoke on his recently published book, “Another Look at Six Myths in the Lost Cause”. We had a fairly good turnout and his presentation was very well received. I would gladly recommend Rick as a speaker to other camps.

In our April 14 meeting, Tom Ridenour from the Belo Camp in Dallas will speak to us on the Confederate Constitution. Tom Ridenour was born in the mountains of southeast Kentucky. His father worked in Kentucky and Virginia coal mines for 47 years. Tom studied music and earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music performance.
For several years he taught music privately

and in several colleges, worked for a major musical instrument company, and subsequently founded his own company. He lives in Duncanville with his family, two dogs and a belligerent cat.

Upcoming Meeting – Summer Extra 2013

In our August meeting, Monday Aug. 12, we will welcome musician Jed Marum, who will be playing and singing some period songs for us. I met Jed in Vicksburg, and I have heard some of his music. I am sure you will not want to miss this meeting if you can possibly make it. I am also going to issue a special invite to SCV members from other camps to see if we can pack out our meeting room for this presentation. To preview Jed’s music, just look up his name on YouTube and you will find it. Please, make every effort to be with us, and be sure to consider bringing a few dollars with you. Jed will be bringing some of his cd’s for purchase. I have also invited some of the members of the Johnson Middleton Tate Camp in Arlington to try to come with some of their SCV hats to sell to those interested. By way of reminder, we meet at Soulman’s BBQ, Ridge Road and I-30. Dinner is at 6 pm, meeting at 7 pm.

New Camp Flag Proposal

At our next meeting I will be proposing that we have made for us a camp flag very similar to the one pictured to the left, which is modeled after the presumed flag of the 6th Texas Cavalry, of which Company B was the Rockwall Cavalry.
